Aquatic weed harvesting

At Specialist Lake Services we harvest aquatic weeds, for example:

    • Canadian Pondweed (Elodea Canadensis)
    • Nuttall’s Pondweed (Elodea Nuttallii)
    • Curled Pondweed (Potamogeton Crispus)
    • Curly Waterweed (Lagarosiphon Major)
    • Duckweeds (Lemna Species)
    • White/ Yellow Water Lily (Nuphar Alba/ Lutea)
    • Broad Leaved Pondweed (Potamogeton Natans)
    • Water Starworts (Callitriche Spp)
    • Parrot’s Feather (Myriophyllum Aquaticum)
    • Mares Tail (Hippuris Vulgaris)
    • Spiked Water Milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum)
    • And many others including Algae

Aquatic weed harvesting is essential for maintaining lakes, ponds, rivers & waterways. Non-maintained waterways can have certain implications such as:

    • Some weeds deoxygenate the water effecting fish and aquatic animals
    • Increasing the risk of flooding, silt and material build up on the waterway
    • Invasive weeds out-compete other species of aquatic plants
    • Unpleasant odours arising from the waterway
    • Disruption to anglers, propellers on boats & general recreation on waterways
Aquatic Weed Harvesting

By utilising the machines manoeuvring capability we can harvest aquatic vegetation targeting specific areas in a waterway. Although aquatic weeds can prove problematic we would encourage clients not to remove the entirety of all aquatic plants. With having sectional areas remaining this will provide habitats and feeding for fish and other aquatic species.

Also, with the machines amphibious nature we find the best and most sensitive way for disposal of any aquatic weeds/ vegetation is to use the gathering rake attachments and remove the vegetation to banked areas around the waterways for a small time period. The advantage using this method allows any fauna removed during this process to return to its habitat and easier future removal as the vegetation dries out.
